From charming night lights that stir childhood memories to bold designs that brighten even the most grown-up spaces, Goodnight Light has redefined what it means to combine form, function, and fun. At the heart of it all is Eva Newton—artist, designer, and co-founder—whose vision has always been to bring joy, warmth, and a touch of magic into the everyday. In this conversation, Eva shares the inspirations, values, and playful spirit that fuel Goodnight Light’s creations, offering a glimpse into a world where design doesn’t just illuminate rooms—it lights up lives.

What inspired you to start Goodnight Light, and what kind of world did you want to create through your lamps?

Goodnight Light was born out of a desire to create joy—simple as that. It started with designing for children, but when we saw adults sneaking lamps for themselves, we realized: everyone craves a little wonder in their everyday. We wanted to make a world where serious design doesn’t take itself too seriously—a world full of color, curiosity, and maybe just a little magic.

“Bringing love and light into homes” is a beautiful motto—what does that phrase evoke for you when you design?

To me, it’s not just poetic fluff—it’s actually the goal. If someone smiles when they walk into a room lit by one of our lamps, then we’ve done our job. "Love and light" means warmth, safety, a bit of whimsy—like being wrapped in a big friendly hug from your childhood.

Goodnight Light strikes a unique balance between art and function. How do you keep that harmony alive during your creative process?

I always ask, “Would this make a child point and say ‘wow’... and would their parent secretly want one too?” That’s the sweet spot. We want our pieces to work practically as lighting, but also to spark something—nostalgia, joy, even a giggle. It’s like pop art with a plug.

How important are sustainability and local craftsmanship in the way you design—and how do those values influence the final product?

They’re absolutely central. We made a conscious decision not to chase cheap production in far-off places, and instead partner with expert craftspeople close to home in Spain. That means more control, better quality, and less guilt. It’s slower, but it feels right—and honestly, that shows in the end product. You can feel the care.

What do you hope someone feels—not just sees—when they use or gift one of your lamps?

Joy. Pure, uncomplicated joy. Maybe a rush of nostalgia or a little moment of escape. I love the idea that our lamps could become a small ritual—something that lights up a space and someone’s mood. And if they’re gifting it? Hopefully, they feel like they’re passing on a bit of that magic.

What’s a moment, project, or customer story that really stayed with you emotionally?

There was a mum who told us her daughter was scared of the dark until she got our paper boat lamp. She said now, bedtime is her daughter’s favorite part of the day. That kind of feedback gets me every time. It reminds me why we do what we do—not just to decorate, but to comfort, to delight, to make someone’s world a little brighter (literally and emotionally).

As the brand grows, what excites you most about the future—new collaborations, designs, or something else?

New designs, hands down! I’m always excited to see what Mark and I dream up next. He’s just designed a sheep you can sit on—or use as an end table—and it’s not even a lamp! It’s made from 100% recycled plastic (old tires, to be exact), and it’s a whole new adventure for us. We’re starting to explore other categories, but always with the same playful spirit and design values. We're also keeping an eye on biodegradable materials—we'd love to use more of them as they become more viable in the industry. The future is looking bright and possibly sheep-shaped.

What does craftsmanship mean to you—and what does it look like in your studio on a normal day?

Craftsmanship means care, intention, and having a bit of a perfectionist streak. In the studio, it looks like long conversations about colors, functionality, endless testing, and occasionally someone swearing softly at a stubborn mold. But mostly, it’s joyful chaos.

If you had to describe your brand's purpose in one heartfelt sentence, what would it be?

To bring a sense of playful wonder into everyday life—one beautiful, slightly quirky design object at a time.
